Oracy

'Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.'

Jimi Hendrix

Oracy is a key pedagogical focus and building block to every lesson and learning experience at St Andrew's Benn C of E, which is built into every lesson, every sequence of lessons and across every subject.

Why?

Speaking and listening skills – cognitively, socially and linguistically - are key to being successful across the curriculum and throughout life. We plan, teach and work to ensure every child has the learning experiences that equips them with the skills to be: confident, articulate and effective communicators in a range of contexts to a variety of people.

Three main elements underpin our Oracy teaching in classrooms that are talk-rich:

  • Learning through talk

  • Learning to talk

  • Learning about talk

Implementation

There are four key components to our Oracy focus:

1.        Planned experiences

2.        Talk-rich classrooms

3.        Vocabulary acquisition and use

4.        Early communication and language development

We plan lessons and schemes of work to ensure that oracy experiences are intentionally designed to develop age-appropriate skills. These experiences cover a range of purposes, both as preparation for final pieces of work and as final outcomes themselves. This approach ensures that all children can confidently and clearly communicate with a variety of people in different situations.

We believe and strive to ensure children talk like:

Computer Scientists ... Designers ... Musicians ... Mathematicians ... Historians ... Geographers ... Artists ... Sportspeople ...
