Intent

We want all children to develop the skill of enquiry and interpretation, so that they are able to confidently ask questions and be inquisitive in their everyday lives. We want to build a repertoire of historical knowledge, an understanding of chronology and appreciation for significant historical events and people, so that they can understand their place in the world and how their world has been impacted by others.
We ensure that children the children are given opportunities to develop an understanding of the similarities and differences (in perspective, society and beliefs) to enable to them to empathise with people both past and present while also helping them understand the concepts of actions and consequences and continuity and change.
Implementation
Using our key lenses and big questions, history at SAB revisits the key threads - local history and British history – in every phrase, and adding in the threads of world history and civilisations and empires in key stage two. Ensuring that substantive and disciplinary knowledge is progressively sequenced for each of our main concepts (historical knowledge, chronology, enquiry an interpretation, actions and consequences, significance (people & events), continuity and change, similarities and differences (perspective, society & beliefs, so that children know more, remember more, and make meaningful connections across their primary school journey.
Teaching is delivered through our six core components (oracy, retrieval, modelling, active engagement, progress for all, feedback) where we provide children with multiple enrichment experiences, including opportunities to talk to experts in fields relevant to the thread and context being studied.
Lenses: Action & consequence, change & continuity, significance, similarities and differences, spirituality
Threads: Local history, British history, world history, civilisations and empires
Concepts: Historical knowledge, chronology, enquiry an interpretation, actions and consequences, significance (people & events), continuity and change, similarities and differences (perspective, society & beliefs).
