Lenses

Our curriculum is structured around key conceptual lenses, revisited across phases and half-terms on a two-year cycle. These lenses drive the context for learning, ensuring that all learning is purposeful and that children can make meaningful connections across subjects and aspects of life.

Oracy underpins everything we do. Children learn about talk, learn through talk, and learn to talk: to investigate the world, to articulate their understanding, and to express joy, curiosity, and purpose. Oracy provides the foundation for all teaching and learning, enabling pupils to articulate their learning in every subject and to link it back to the Key Lens and Big Question.

Through this approach, learning is purposeful, focused, and coherent—empowering children to see connections, develop deep understanding, and confidently communicate their ideas.

Big Questions

Through the regular revisiting of our key lenses within and across subjects, pupils develop a cumulative body of knowledge that grows over time. This approach enables them to make meaningful connections between their learning, which is evidenced in their responses to our Big Questions.

These Big Questions are revisited every two years, ensuring that prior learning is built upon and that pupils develop increasing depth and complexity of understanding.

Subject Threads & Concepts

Driven by our lenses and big questions, each subject is designed around key threads woven repeatedly through each phase of school, through which key concepts are taught, thus organising subject knowledge in a meaningful way. By continually revisiting our key threads and concepts, it ensures children receive a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum that enables them to know more and remember more long-term, whilst making long-lasting connections across and between learning.

Our curriculum is derived around purpose, ensuring all lessons across the curriculum are meaningful with purposeful outcomes with real-life context, questions and projects.

Core Components

At St Andrew's Benn, we use our Big Six Core Components as the foundation for delivering all lessons across every subject. We believe that the fundamental pedagogical knowledge and skills that underpin effective teaching are universal and applicable to learning in all areas of the curriculum.

By applying these core components consistently, we ensure that every student experiences high-quality instruction, regardless of the subject they are studying. This approach supports coherent learning, builds strong foundations, and promotes academic success across the board.
