Bedtime Stories
There are many benefits to children having a bedtime story. Apart from the opportunity to spend some quality time with your child, cuddled up enjoying a good book together, there are many other proven benefits such as:
1. Reading aloud improves a child's vocabulary
Children can comprehend higher level vocabulary and follow a more complex plot long before they can read it on their own.
We often mistakenly assume that young children will only pay attention to colourfully-illustrated picture books written for their age group. In fact, many children enjoy much more complex stories.
2. Reading aloud improves a child's attention span
Unlike watching TV or playing on a computer, reading aloud requires children to imagine the scenes in their minds.
When they listen to an adult read book, children must pay attention to descriptive writing as the story slowly unfolds through the author’s words.
3. Bedtime stories provide an educational opportunity
Alongside the vocabulary and grammatical benefits, a well-written historical fiction or novel set in the time period you’re currently studying allows children to absorb facts while being captivated by an engrossing tale.
The staff at St Andrew's Benn value bedtime stories and we understand that sometimes life can be busy so we have started filming staff reading stories for your children to enjoy at bedtime. We hope you enjoy them. If you have any requests for stories, please email admin.
