Implementation

The National Curriculum’s main stages of design process: design, make and evaluate. With the additional focus on Technical Knowledge, Cooking and Nutrition. The Kapow Scheme that we are using focuses on Spiral Curriculum approach, with key areas revisited and building on previous knowledge. The lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent task, paired and group work including practical hands-on, computer-based and inventive tasks. Differentiated guidance is provided for every lesson so every child is included and can access this subject. Differentiation for the learner is based on support for individual child/groups yet keeping the outcome the same. We have taken this scheme and used it as a guide to adapt to our own topics and themes. It provides a great starting point to make sure the skills and processes are being taught in high quality, adapted to the needs of individuals.

Impact

After the implementation of our Design Technology curriculum, pupils should leave school equipped with a range of skills to enable them to succeed in their secondary education and be innovative and resourceful member of society. Additionally, Britain is facing a skilled trade worker shortage and exposing children in our school to Design Technology experiences may inspire a career using the skill.
