Implementation

At St Andrew’s Benn our Art and design curriculum has been designed to be inclusive but challenging, exciting but thoughtful and skill based but creative. The art planning is split into 3 phases KS1, LKS2 and UKS2. Each phase covers 6 art techniques over the course of a year; drawing, painting, textiles, collage, 3d and printmaking. Lessons have been designed to develop skills within each phase while also building on the skills developed in the previous phase. Teachers have access to a wide range of resources and know that they can call upon the subject lead and other members of staff as and when required.

Each child and class teacher has a sketchbook. We give the child ownership of their sketchbook in order to foster their sense of creativity. Children use their sketchbooks to make initial sketches, develop skills, record ideas and develop opinions. A range of artists, architects and craft makers are studied and children are given the opportunity to explore, recreate, magpie and evaluate their work. Assessment is ongoing; it is based on the children’s verbal responses, their sketch book work and their final pieces. Teachers are skilled in identifying children who may need extra support or further challenge.

Impact

Our children know the value and impact of Art and design in their world and time and in the wider world and throughout history.  Teachers have higher expectations and more quality evidence can be presented in a variety of ways. Children use technical vocabulary accurately and are able to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified.

Children improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them, and become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art. Children show competences in improving their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work. Children in school can speak confidently about their art and design work and their skills. Pupils feel a sense of achievement and growth as they revisit skills more independently. As they progress through the school they become proficient in the 6 art techniques; they feel pride, a sense of achievement and thrive from opportunities to create art work for themselves and others.
