Soda Bread Recipe

Children have asked if we can post the recipe for the soda bread they have been making today.  Please see ingredients and method.

Ingredients

14oz plain flour
1 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 level teaspoon of cream of tartar
1 level teaspoon of salt
2 level teaspoons of sugar
300ml of buttermilk (available in pots)

If the ingredient mixture is too dry please add a little semi skimmed milk

Method

1. Place all the dry ingredients into a bowl
2. Lightly lift and drop the mixture into the bowl using your fingertips
3. Make a well in the middle of the ingredients
4. Add the buttermilk a little bit at a time and mix until it forms a dough (the dough must not be too wet)
5. Knead the dough very lightly
6. Place on a greased baking tray
7. Make small pinches all over the surface to add air
8. Make a deep cut across both ways (see picture for example)
9. Place in the over at 190 degrees for 20 minutes
10. Take out of the oven and tap the top - if it sounds hollow, turn it over and place back in the over for 5 minutes
11. Remove from oven, tap it and if sounds hollow it is ready
12. Leave to cool for a minimum of 1 hour (it will be too doughy before that time)
